17% of mothers (1 in 7) experience Perinatal Depression or Anxiety

Anxiety is universal symptom- often constant, distressing and disabling

The symptoms can ease off at times and they can still enjoy the baby but they struggle with their role and others close to them can notice it

There is usually no past history and these symptoms are hard to understand

These symptoms can start and be maintained by baby related issues- unsettledness, poorly sleeping baby

Risk Factors

  • Single Parent or poor supports
  • Unplanned or Unwanted Pregnancy
  • Complications in perinatal period
  • High Risk Pregnancy (e.g. IVF, Twin, PIH)
  • Problems in Relationship with partner
  • Past or Family History of Depression
  • Perfectionistic personality
  • Age >35 y and high achieving mothers
  • Recently Migrated
  • Sick Baby
  • Difficulties with breast feeding
